Trailer Guides

The dump trailer buying guide

A dump trailer is the hardest working thing on your hitch, and the market is full of pretty ones that cannot take it. Here is what actually matters, from a factory that builds them.

GVWR is the number that matters

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating covers the trailer plus its load. Our 7x14 dump trailer has a listed 14,000 lb GVWR. Subtract the actual empty weight of the configured build and check other applicable ratings before planning cargo. Our 14K dump payload guide explains the calculation and why gravel volume alone cannot establish a suitable load.

Size: 7x14 is the sweet spot

Fourteen feet swallows a full bucket chain of gravel, a compact tractor, or a demo job's worth of debris, while staying short enough to place in a tight driveway. Go longer only if you routinely haul machines; go shorter only if your tow vehicle demands it.

Axles and brakes are not optional

Loaded dump trailers are heavy by design, and every serious one needs brake axles. Two 7,000 lb brake axles are the working standard. Check the axle stickers, not the brochure.

The three features you will use every week

  • Spreader gate. Meters gravel out in an even ribbon as you pull forward instead of dumping a pile to rake by hand.
  • Ramps. Turn the trailer into an equipment hauler for the skid steer or mini excavator.
  • Roll tarp. Keeps the load legal and your windshield fund intact. All three come standard on our 7x14.

Steel first, always

Dump bodies live a violent life. Gravel hammers the floor, buckets scrape the sides, and the hoist cycles under full load. Heavy-duty steel in the body, frame, and gate is the difference between a 15 year trailer and a 4 year one. It is the only way we build them in Booneville.
